Introducing the Harry Potter Reading Challenge
<<cough cough>> Dang all that awesome mist and fog is getting me all verklempt.
Anyway, the deets:
What: Read or listen to all seven books in the Harry Potter series
- Sorcerer’s Stone
- Chamber of Secrets
- Prisoner of Azkaban
- Goblet of Fire
- Order of the Pheonix
- Half-Blood Prince
- Deathly Hallows
When: The challenge will run from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010. I know we’re all busy with life and work and other such fun things so join up whenever you want, there are no deadlines to the challenge besides the end date above.
Where: E-to the Everywhere! Post reviews on your blog, chat about it on messageboards, post vlogs or podcasts, comment on and converse about it in the monthly post I create here on Galleysmith. It’s entirely up to you, as long as there is some evidence of your having completed each book along the way you are good to go.
How: Get thee to Mr. Linky below. Sign up to join in and play, cause you know….Harry would want you to and all!
Then, post a kick off post on your blog and link it back up according to the details on the monthly HPRC post also available here on Galleysmith
You can find August’s post already up! If you don’t have a blog then comment to the post I put up each month and point us to where you are chatting about it or join/start a conversation of your own right then and there.
Oh but the fun doesn’t stop there!!
I have one more thing you might want to hear about….
Party Gifts!!
I mean come on….what is a party like without gifts? So, over the course of the year there will be giveaways y’all. All things Harry Potter are game so keep an eye out to see what’s happening as we’re truckin’ along.
Since I want to start this party off in style I’m going to give away two Harry Potter box sets (one paperback and one hardcover)! See….look….pretty!
All you need to do is sign up to participate in the challenge by August 15th and I’ll draw two lucky winners at random to recieve all seven books! How’s that for incentive right?
So get yourselves on over to our friend Mr. Linky up there and sign on to participate in the challenge.

iwriteinbooks:
Aw, man I JUST finished, no joke, like two months ago, the entire seven books in a month. I thought I was the last person on earth who hadn’t read them so was trying to pack them in before someone found out. I think I’ll sit this one out since I was JUST there but enjoy!

Jo:
I don’t know if you’re aware, but I think you’re using the same Mr Linky for both this post and the August Post. I just went to sign the August Post’s Mr Linky with my kick off post, to find that I already had signed it with my URL, to say I was participating.

Literate Housewife:
I cannot tell you how much flack I get at work because I haven’t read these books yet. My thought is – who cares what I think about Harry Potter? I am the last person (now that iwriteinbooks is finished) on earth to read them. My opinion is of no interest. But, if there is a challenge, this might be the time to do it. I’m in!

Michelle:
That is so odd because they really are two separate memes and have totally different code. I’ll have to look into it a little further. Thanks for the heads up
July 22, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Deborah:
*sigh* that’s what i’ve been doing for the past few months, i’ve been listening to all the audiobooks (for the umpteenth time) while i’m working. i’m on HBP so i’ll have to bow out. oh well, have fun guys!
July 22, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Michelle:
For anyone who had an issue where they wanted to post their kick off post but the Mr. Linky already had the other link in it I had to redo. So please go back and relink your kickoff!
July 22, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Becky at One Literature Nut:
I’m SO in! I don’t care that I’m reading the last two right now. Maybe I’ll start with those and then go back and read the first five?
I purchased the adult British edition for my 30th birthday and have been waiting to sit and read them all. What a perfect reason to now! Thanks!
By the way…why in the world have I not been following you yet?!? I’m subscribing to your feeds now.

Jen - Devourer of Books:
The only one I haven’t read multiple times is the last one, but I loooove Harry Potter. My college roommates and I went as the Gryffendor Quidditch team for Halloween one year and liked to try to “accio!” things across the room. Funnily it never worked.
In other words, I’m in. This sounds like a good excuse to re-read these, and perhaps listen to the much-praised Jim Dale audios for some of the shorter ones. In fact, I’m off to request the first one on audio at the library.
July 22, 2009 at 8:11 pm
BrookeReviews:
This works for me….since I’ve only read the first one!
July 22, 2009 at 9:01 pm

Anywho, I am very excited to reread all the books it has been years, I read the first four in a couple of weeks then last three as they came out. Thank you for hosting the challenge. I will have to come up with a Potter Prize.

Carrie Anne:
Wow, I can’t believe the timing with this challenge (Just heard about it from Belle – Ms Bookish). I’ve never read any of the books but have seen the movies. I just decided recently to get the books to read to my kids. This is brilliant. Thanks
July 23, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Cat:
Whoops, I think I MrLinky’d wrong. I put only my blog URL in this one – I think I should have linked to actual post? It was a mistake in copy/pasting. I apparently fail at basic computer functions that I have been doing since I was a teen. *blush* So I linked my participation post to the August HPRC MyLinky.
And now I am going to back away slowly while saying, “Thanks for this challenge!”
July 24, 2009 at 8:30 am
Tif:
I am definitely interested in this challenge!!!! I just started re-reading the books though. Just to clarify . . . do we have to start the books on August 1st? If so, then I may hold off and re-start then! Nothing beats a good HP read!!

margo:
Thanks for the challenge. I’ve been meaning to re-read the HP books again. The 1st time I read them I loved them but wouldn’t allow myself to go to full dork-dom and truly love the books. I can’t wait to begin!!
July 25, 2009 at 9:23 am
Amanda:
Resistance was futile. I had to join.
July 25, 2009 at 10:02 am

July 25, 2009 at 10:44 am
Michelle:
You did it exactly right actually! The Mr. Linky here is to express your interest in participating in the challenge. The Mr. Linky in the August post is to link up your kick off post and any reviews over the course of August.

Michelle:
Amy, let me see about scaling down the graphic I have on this post to be a more manageable size for a button

Lady Lazarus:
I’m so in for this challenge. I’ve been dying to read these books for a while and this is just the kind of thing I need to spur myself on.

Prongs:
Um wow We CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS! Since our blog is Hp driven this is perfect! Cant wait to link back to you and get this started! I have been meaning to re-read for awhile so this is the prefect excuse.
July 25, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Jenny:
I just added my name! I actually made this a goal of mine in 2008 and didn’t make it, so I made it a goal again this year. I am almost done re-reading #4 which is as far as I ever got. I’m hoping to finish 5-7 this year, so this challenge is great!
July 25, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Lily:
I love Harry Potter, read all the books and seen all the movies. Looking forward to reading them again. I’m glad we have a while to read them in as I’ve got a ton of other books to read and review as well
July 25, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Mardel S:
I would like to try this challeng, but i have to wait until after school starts, since the only two Harry Potter books I have left are the last two. The first five have disappeared somehow…
July 26, 2009 at 4:22 am

Jenna:
Okay, so I NEVER picked up Harry Potter.. and honestly I never really wanted too. But since I teach middle school now, all my students try to talk to me about the books (and movies) and I have no clue what is going on… I’ve been toying with the idea lately, and this challenge was just the extra push I needed!!
July 26, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Whitney:
I love Harry Potter! Thanks so much for hosting this challenge.
July 26, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Ann-Kat (Today, I Read...):
Looks like my timing is pretty good…
I just started reading the series not too long ago, because (blushes) I was one of the few people on earth who’d seen the movies but hadn’t read the books.
The first two books are now done, but I wouldn’t mind reading them again.
BTW, I can now understand why some people are upset with the movie versions because I decided to watch the corresponding movie after finishing the book and oh boy did my eyes bug out.
July 26, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Tara:
Thank you so much for hosting this! I’ve been wanting to get around to reading the entire series forever now and this is the perfect way to make me do it!!!
July 26, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Ryan:
I haven’t read the series since the last book came out so I’m excited for this. Somehow I ended up linking twice once under my name and once under the blog name. If you can delete the name Ryan Groff I would be more than ok with that.
