Hello there challengers!
We’ve moved into a brand spankin’ new month here with the Harry Potter Reading Challenge and with it comes a brand spanking new Mister Linky to submit your challenge posts with. When you post a review, discussion, or anything at all having to do with the HPRC make sure you hop on over here and submit it so all the challengers can visit!
This month I thought I’d include a discussion piece. So let’s chat here in the comments too shall we? My questions to all of you are: Why did you decide to start or re-read this series? What is it about this series that makes you want to do so?
Jump in and chat away with your fellow challengers I bet we all have quite a bit in common.

Amy Reads Good Books:
Great questions! I’m really enjoying the challenge. When the books first came out, I thought it’d be fun to wait and read them with my own kids. Now, a few years later, no kids yet, but my stepdaughter got into them. Since she was reading the books, my husband started. I wanted to join in the fun, so this challenge came at a perfect time!

Jen - Devourer of Books:
I’m halfway through the second book already. I had already been thinking about rereading the series after watching the 6th movie. I have read all the books and seen all the movies multiple times (other than the last 2 movies, only once each for those so far). What I have never done, though, is read the series all the way through. Even though I’m not doing them consecutively right now, doing the whole series again in probably 6 months or so will be a new experience. I think it will really help me see how Rowling fit everything together.

I started the series because my friends and my boyfriend’s mom LOVE it. They say it’s such an amazing series. I’ve only read the first two books, and I must say…I’m not hooked. I enjoy the characters and the magic. The writing leaves a bit to be desired, as does Harry and pals never deciding to tell their elders what’s going on and taking it upon themselves. I know, I know if this didn’t happen there would be no story! haha Still.
I’m going to keep reading though, mostly because I like Snape, Hermione, and Ron.

Molly:
I am actually not re-reading —- but reading for the first time! I have listened to the first 3 books in my car and have LOVED them all. I am looking forward to actually reading all 7 books for this challenge. Hopefully once I get back into the swing of things at school – I can devote some concentrated time to this great reading challenge.

I just love this series! I decided to re-read them simply because I wanted a refresher before the last movies came out. I find that over the years little details slip and I wanted to have the story fresh in my mind.

I’ve taken up your challenge because I’m darn tired of having to explain why I haven’t read the books yet. People are astonished or feel the need to say things such as: You call yourself a book lover/reader and you haven’t read Harry Potter? I figure that by the end of the year I’ll say Yes and cut the conversation short if I want to.

I only read till Bk 3 last year and I got sidetracked by the other books (blame it on my TBR pile!!)… anyway I want to read the series before the next final movie is out and plus, your challenge is fun!

Caanan:
Wanted to say thanks for this reading challenge–it’s exactly what I needed to finally crack open the books (got 1-6 on sale last year). I just finished the series yesterday and really enjoyed it–even more than the movies I had already seen.

Andrea:
I first read the Harry Potter series right before book 5 came out because my boyfriend at the time loved it. I fell in love and reread the series many times searching for clues for what would happen in the remaining books and participating in the HP fandom online. I reread the series after the final book came out, but seeing the 6th movie this summer made me want to revisit them once again, this challenge gave me the perfect opportunity. Reading the first book this week was great. I’m slowing down and enjoying the characters and the world and story in a way that I haven’t since my first reading. Thanks!

Amy:
I decided to read them because when we saw the new movie this summer, I was finally tired of not catching every little thing that was going on! I decided I wanted to see the last movie for the series completely in the know. Plus I have to say I want to figure out what it is that makes Harry so attracted to Ginny. In the movie she seems so flat and kind of uninteresting – hopefully she is a fuller character in the books!

Carrie K.:
I decided to listen to these on audiobooks with my kids after watching the most recent HP movie and being bummed at how much was left out. My kids haven’t shown any interest in reading the books – probably because they’ve seen most of the movies multiple times – but I wanted them to know how much they were missing.
We just finished listening to book 1 last week and have started Chamber of Secrets.
