100 Mile Fitness Challenge

Man Twitter is a dangerous place isn’t it?
Today I was chatting with Amanda of The Zen Leaf and Rebecca of Lost in Books about a fitness challenge that Amanda had been doing.
What is this challenge you ask? Well for a change it’s not about reading, this challenge is about fitness. Now, I’d actually already heard of this challenge through both Beth Beth Fish Reads and Dawn of She is Too Fond of Books as they are either participating or plan to. So without further ado, this post stands as my official kick off/sign up post for the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge.
As I’ve mentioned before I have lupus and my rheumatologist has really been pushing me to be more active but because of my special circumstances I have to do so in a low impact way. What makes me so excited about this challenge (outside of the support from fellow book bloggers participating) is that yoga will be able to be counted towards the overall tally. 15 minutes of activity a day counts as a mile so if I get into the regimen my doctor has outlined then I should hopefully be able to get fit and strengthen my immune system.
The challenge runs from January 1st to March 31st and asks that participants “travel” 100 miles total over that time. I’ll be tracking my progress here on the blog so you can see how I’m doing (or not, haha). Oh and if you’re interested in joining up check out the link above. It looks like a great way to make a healthy choice.

Update #1 – January 10, 2010
So, I’m off to a bad start. Week one brought with it diagnosis of a hideous sinus infection, and unexpected death in the family, and an inability to overcome my tremendous ability to procrastinate. I did, however, make the effort to go to Best Buy and purchase a Wii and WiiFit Plus. Sadly, they were out of stock of the latter so I’ll have to go the online route which means it’ll be a few days until I actually get it. So all this to say that I did ZERO miles this week. But hope to make up for it by doubling up on miles in the weeks to come. Today I’m going to pull out the sheets my physical therapist gave me that demonstrate my stretching exercises. That should give me a good 15 minutes of exercise a day until I get the WiiFit.

Prongs:
It is so wonderful that we have an online community to help keep each other motivated! I know from trying to start fitness routines in the past that staying motivated is by far the hardest part. I plan on matching this up with the new season of Biggest Loser, and do alot of my working out during the show!

I am so happy that you have decided to join. I, too, am excited that yoga will count. We have to keep to our prescribed exercises! I look forward to participating in this with you!

Amanda:
I’m glad you’re joining. This has been really helpful to me and though I’m still very overweight, I hope this will help me lose weight and get in better shape in the new year. it’s already done a little bit toward that since I really started working on it around Thanksgiving.

Good luck! I’m trying to do more yoga as well, but so far I’m failing. Maybe I should join.

As you know, I’m joining in too. We are so lucky to have this community to help motivate us! I am notoriously lazy.
Good luck!

Good luck with the challenge! I’m thinking about joining but I’ll probably have my hands full with the Game on Diet.

Debbie:
Good luck! I didn’t realize you had lupus but I hope this helps you get more active. I need to get more active as well. Once my all day sickness passes I want to try and get out walking at least 3-5 times a week.

Carin:
I think I will join this challenge. I gained 15 pounds last year and am busting out of all my clothes! It’s so depressing! Thanks for posting it! I’ll sign up in the AM for it.
Also, have you thought about water aerobics? I heard that is supposed to be super easy on the joints and a great workout. I’ve been trying to get my mom to do it for years, and she just won’t. She has terrible arthritis, a hip replacement, and degenerated disks in her back. I really wish she’s give it a try.

Trish:
Ugh–now that I’ve sent in a contact for the comments show up!
Anyway, thanks for signing up for the challenge. Yoga is a great low impact exercise–even pilates can be an alternative. I haven’t tried water aerobics, but I see Carin has suggested it–I’ve heard it’s great for the joints.
Best wishes!

Oh! You’re doing this too? I just found it on another blog today and decided to join up, I’m very excited. I’m trying to bring exercise back into my daily habits. I just got a wii fit so that can help me keep track time wise.

I’m off to a slow start too, but I love that I have a measurable goal and a way to be accountable – as well as a support group. Good luck to you!
I’d really like to hear what you think about WiiFit.

Don’t let week one get you discouraged. I’m off to a slow start, too, but we’ll get to the finish line. Just stick with it. Also envying your soon to come wii fit! I want!
