categories : List of Ten
Guys, I’m going to be conducting an experiment over the course of the rest of the year.
Traditionally I take the period between Thanksgiving and the New Year to minimize my reading commitments in order pick up books that I’ve let fall to the wayside. Be they backlist, new releases or genres I don’t typically jump on quickly enough I like that this time is a more flexible time to just sit back, relax and do whatever. Having said that, this year I’m going to try out something a little different, this year I’m going adapt a method that my very good friend Andi (HOLLA to Boston!) employs.
You see, she creates a list of eight books and she reads them straight through in order. Once complete she crafts the next list of eight. Me, I’m going to do a list of ten — one ebook, one book from a series, one audio, two backlist (at least a year old if possible), two ARCs, two recent releases and one book I just can’t wait to read. I average around ten books a month so this round number seems to work for me.
Most people like to have flexibility (me included) but lately I’ve found myself just standing in front of the bookshelf overwhelmed by the choices and just not “feeling” my next read. It feels a bit off and sad because I have all these fantastic books and I can’t quite seem to gravitate to one in particular. So now, I’ve got a plan! I’m going to formulate the list of ten, power through them, then construct another list after and so on and so on and so on. Honestly, I’m going to be be interested to see if I’m powering through books faster as a result of eliminating indecision.
NOW, this doesn’t mean that if I get an offer for a book as part of a tour or other promotional event I won’t slip it in, because let’s face it I can be a bit of a cheater in these cases. I imagine myself being happy to revise a list if the need arises. But only for the circumstance of pitches. Other than that it stays rock solid!
I’ll be posting my list at the end of the prior list and will keep a running tab over in the right hand sidebar as well. That way y’all can keep track of my progress with me.
Without further ado here is my first List of Ten:
A Great and Terrible Beauty – audio
Amplified – new release
Between the Sea and Sky – ebook
Cinder – series
Dark Souls – ARC – this was a DNF holy slowness batman!
Hold Still – backlist
Hallowed – can’t wait to read
Eve – ARC
Sweetly – new release
Darkness, Be My Friend – backlist
It’s my plan to start up with my audio in the car today (if I actually leave the house at all, LOL) and will crack open Amplified as well. Here’s to a successful experiment!

I had big plans to read whatever struck my fancy November and December but, so far, it hasn’t worked out that way. I wish you luck!

Good luck with your list. I’ve tried to plan out my reading in advance but it never seems to stick. I love the idea though.

I love the idea of this because I always (in theory) want to mix up my reading so I pack in books new and old, fiction and nonfiction, ebooks and print books, ya and adult, and on and on….but usually I end up just staring at the shelves (or ereader) and just grabbing whatever appeals to me in the moment. Will look forward to seeing how this works for you. It if goes well, I might have to try it myself.

You know… this is such a great idea! I myself often feel the same way! I am so overwhelmed by the books I want to read and have to read that I don’t know what to choose. I spend more time trying to decide what I want to read and avoiding picking something out to read that I probably could have read several books in that time!
I might have to steal this idea from you and try it for myself!
I’d love to hear how it works out for you!

I’m telling you it is so much easier to get through a book when you know what is coming up next instead of having to make a decision. I’ve done this method for probably about two months mixing old and new with borrowed books, books I own and NOOK books and I’m happy as a clam. However, if I got an ARC of Pandemonium or Insurgent, the lust would have to wait. Actually the ok I was currently reading would have to wait. HAHA. Good luck!

Great idea, Michelle. Here’s to powering through!

I love this idea. I used to plan my reading when I did the Seasonal Reading Challenge on goodreads (there’s a billion tasks and you get points and it really helped me tackle my TBR).
I think if I were to do it, I’d probs do it as a list of 11 – the extra book being whatever is number 1 in my goodreads TBR queue. Sigh. I want to do this really badly after Cybils hahahaha.

This is a really great idea – I can’t wait to see how many other people have success with it!
Unfortunately, I’m ridiculously immature because the second I “assign” myself a reading task all desire to read goes out the window…

I avoid my bookshelf like the plague lately. I may try this – though I will probably just end up cheating.

I am very interested to see how this works out for you. I know *I* could never stick to this but I’m intrigued.
