Have you heard of the 48-Hour Book Challenge?

I have! Not only have I heard about it but I’m totally excited to be participating in it. It will be just what I need after a full week of bookish and blogging activity while at Book Expo America and Book Blogger Convention the week before. It will be perfect for getting some of the books I have for review read before digging into the pile I night be bringing home with me from New York.

Here are the details:

Hostess with the Mostess: Pam of MotherReader
When: June 4-6, 2010
Where: 48-Hour Book Challenge

I’ll likely be doing most of my reading from the couch, much like I did with the Readathon. I know I won’t pull off a full 48 but I so enjoy the challenge of putting in as much time and getting as many pages/chapters/books read as possible over a set period of time.

You all should think about joining me too!

I love me a game!  What’s more, I love me a game with cool friends.  The best thing?  I love me a game with cool friends and bragging rights!  Roll all that together and you’ve to the Reading Our Own Books Challenge.

What’s this you ask?

The point is to encourage the players to dig into their TBR pile exclusively.  Specifically books received (whether by purchase or library or whatnot) prior to March 15, 2010.

How does one play?

Players begin to count books started no earlier than April 1 and finished no later than April 30. There are no points for books started prior to or after the above dates, thus the book I currently have in progress is doing nothing for my game because I started it at the end of last month.

Each book read during the month of April will be assigned points based on the following point structure:

  • −5 points for reading a book from your TBR stack (owned before 3/15)
  • −3 points for reading a review copy (review promised in April)
  • −2 points for reading a library copy
  • +6 points for reading a new book (owned or borrowed after 3/15)

At the end of the month we add up all of our points and the person with the lowest score wins!

But wait, there is more math to it than that (and can I just say that I’m not a mathematician by any stretch so I’m poaching this all from my friend at Beth Fish Reads). She says:

“Now some of you may be wondering about reading speed and size of the books read. For example, I may read 10 books a month but someone else may read 15. I might read two 500-page books, but another player reads ten 100-page books What to do? No worries, we came up with a equalizer: We simply divide our final points by the number of books read.

So for our example, my final score would be −26 ÷ 10 = −2.6″

Seems sorta kinda simple right? Yea, I’ll leave the math to the smart people!  They’ll tell me who won. :)

What does one win?

Bragging rights!

**neener neener neener**

Well, that and books! Cause the winner will get a book from each player’s TBR pile as a treat to boot.  Books and braggin’?  Um, hells yea, I’m totally in!

Who am I playing against?

Candace of Beth Fish Reads
Carrie of Books and Movies
Jennifer of Literate Housewife
Marg of The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader
Natasha of 1330V
Sarah of Puss Reboots

Our friend Jen of Devourer of Books was scheduled to play as well but she’s moving and ultimately made the wise choice of stepping back and cheering us on instead.

Even though we’ve capped this game off at the people listed above I encourage you all to play along and keep track of your own score!
